U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) currently claims extraordinary authority to stop and question people at interior immigration checkponts in the 100-mile border zone, which runs along our southern border with Mexico, our northern border with Canada, and our maritime boundaries on the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. If you find yourself at an interior immigration checkpoint, know that you have rights. Although CBP likes to act like its authority is unlimited, it is not. Understanding what Border Patrol agents can and cannot do will help you to better protect yourself.
This upcoming legislative session, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to move the cause of liberty forward in New Mexico. A new governor and shakeups in the legislature mean that, for the first time in over ten years, we have multiple opportunities to pass legislation that protects and extends our freedoms. But if we're going to succeed, we need your help.
We are holding seven trainings across the state to give you the tools to have powerful and productive conversations with legislators.
At the event, ACLU of New Mexico trainers will highlight some of the most pressing issues facing our state, and equip you with the tools you need to join the fight to reform our criminal justice system, expand reproductive choice, and ensure all people have a place in our state.
We'll also connect you to resources and a network of activists engaged in our efforts. Together, we can advance an ambitious civil liberties agenda through the legislature.
Be a part of the movement to strengthen civil liberties in 2019. Join us for one of our seven training sessions.
