"Gender-affirming care saves lives. We know that placing barriers between young people and medically necessary care deprives them of the chance to grow, thrive, and live authentically – in their own bodies and within our communities. All major medical associations have determined this care to be safe, appropriate, and effective. In New Mexico, we safeguard people’s access to the care they need. Gender-affirming care is still protected and fully legal in the state of New Mexico. We know from our research that New Mexicans believe families should make healthcare decisions for their children, not politicians.

In upholding Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for young people, the court got it wrong. Denying transgender youth the health care they need solely because they’re trans is discriminatory. These laws block healthcare access and undermine the right we all have to bodily autonomy.

For generations, transgender people have faced efforts to erase us from public life — and every one of them has failed. This is no different. Our organizations remain united and undeterred in the fight to protect and expand access to life-saving, affirming healthcare for trans and non-binary people. We will not stop fighting because we know that those who seek to ban abortion and gender affirming care will not stop with young people. Let this decision be a wake up call for every person and every parent who wants to make health care decisions for themselves and their families without government bans. Politicians who politicize our health care and demean our families have made it harder for young people to access life-saving care, but they will not dim the brilliant dignity of LGBTQ+ people and our families.

A world without trans people has never existed and never will. "
