We have received a number of contacts regarding the position the ACLU of New Mexico has taken in support of HB 237, a bill related to deaf education in New Mexico. While the bill has been tabled for this legislative session, we want to affirm our support of legislation that ensures the equitable and adequate distribution of learning resources for deaf and hard-of-hearing students across the state, just as we would for any other historically disenfranchised group. This was the intent of HB 237. The ACLU of New Mexico's mission is to protect and advance justice, liberty, and equity as guaranteed by the constitutions of New Mexico and the United States and our support for HB 237 aligns with that mission.
