Immigrants detained at Torrance County Detention Facility in New Mexico issued an open letter and announced a hunger strike to protest dangerous conditions and mistreatment by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and its private prison operator CoreCivic.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico and Innovation Law Lab today released more than a hundred pages of documents, obtained through public records requests and litigation, show dangerous conditions and understaffing at the TCDF are much more pervasive than previously revealed.

On August 24, 2022,  Kesley Vial, a young man from Brazil, died of a fatal suicide attempt that occurred on August 17 while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Torrance County Detention Facility (TCDF).
