ALBUQUERQUE, NM - In a voting rights victory, the Supreme Court today denied the Trump administration’s effort to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census. The Supreme Court agreed that the administration’s stated reason for adding the question was “contrived.”

The American Civil Liberties Union, New York Civil Liberties Union, and Arnold & Porter challenged the administration’s action on behalf of immigrants’ rights groups.

Peter Simonson, executive director of the ACLU of New Mexico, had this reaction to today's ruling:

“The Trump Administration’s effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census was never anything more than a shameful attempt to disempower already marginalized communities and terrorize immigrant families. The Supreme Court’s ruling thwarts Trump’s attempts to weaponize the census and affirms every person in New Mexico and across our country should be counted. It is a victory for communities of color and democracy itself.”
