New Mexico’s criminal justice system is broken, and we need smart solutions to reduce crime and keep our communities safe. We can do that by focusing our efforts on cost-effective, evidence-based alternatives to incarceration, and make sure we’re spending limited public tax dollars to address this problem in a smart and responsible way.

That’s why we’re proud to support SB 263, sponsored by Sen. Joseph Cervantes (D-Dona Ana). SB 263 would require that any new proposal to increase or create new penalties for a crime be assessed for its fiscal impact on New Mexico’s already meager resources.

We know that increasing penalties comes with a cost, and SB 263 will help make sure we’re being fiscally responsible when new laws are proposed that would increase or create new criminal penalties.
