Law enforcement officers are entrusted with a tremendous amount of power in our society, up to and including the use of lethal force. That level of power must be balanced with accountability, transparency and oversight, and officer worn cameras are a crucial ingredient in that recipe. Officer worn cameras work. Cameras alone will not solve violence and excessive use of force, but camera technology has been shown to lower use of force rates, reduce complaints against police, and even reduce violence against officers. As of 2016, half of all state and local law enforcement agencies in the country have adopted their use. This bill will mandate that all police officers in New Mexico wear body cameras.
