Santa Fe: End Solitary Confinement Kick-Off Event

April 19, 2024 @ 6:00 pm

Join the ACLU of New Mexico and Organizers in the Land of Enchantment (OLÉ) on Friday, April 19 at Santa Fe Community College in the Automotive Technologies Center (ATC) for the launch of our 2024/25 campaign to end solitary confinement in New Mexico and advocate for transparency in the prison system. Doors open at 6pm.

  • We will screen a short film about the realities of solitary confinement.
  • The screening will be followed by discussions with survivors of solitary and advocates for prison reform.
  • Together, we'll then delve into actionable steps to move our cause forward, including urging New Mexico's congressional leaders to co-sponsor the End Solitary Confinement Act and calling upon our state representative to institute independent oversight of the prison system.

There will be plenty of food and meaningful connections to make. Whether you're new to these critical issues or have experienced incarceration yourself, this event is for you. Join us, engage with fellow community leaders, and contribute to the momentum driving prison reform and the pursuit of humane treatment in New Mexico.

This event will be followed up on May 10th with the second part of our series. The topic on May 10th will be voter re-enfranchisement. Millions of people in the United States have been or are currently disenfranchised through incarceration. Advocates across the country have made great strides in restoring the right to vote, including in New Mexico. We will discuss how human silencing relates to violence and recidivism rates for the purpose of using our voices to shift power back into our communities!
