The Candidates on Civil Liberties

Below is a factual comparison based on public records, official actions, and reporting.

  • Issued an executive order reaffirming that city resources may not be used to assist in federal civil immigration enforcement, except where legally required.
  • Directed the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) to confirm ICE activity when asked by the public and expanded virtual access to city services to reduce fear of interacting with government systems. (Executive Order)

Civil Rights & Equality Infrastructure

  • Established the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) and the Office of Civil Rights to advance racial, economic, and social equity across city government. (OEI Overview)
  • Under OEI, the city expanded efforts around diverse hiring, city contracting equity, culturally responsive service delivery, and immigrant/refugee support. (City Equity Programs)

On Homelessness & Criminalization

  • Under the current administration, the ACLU of New Mexico has at times challenged city practices that have harmed unhoused people, reflecting our commitment to accountability regardless of who is mayor.

Darren White

    (NM Political Report)

Civil Asset Forfeiture

  • As Bernalillo County Sheriff, White was held responsible in a civil judgment requiring over $3 million in damages for participation in a forfeiture scheme the ACLU of New Mexico described as “racially profiling for profit.” (ACLU-NM Statement)

On Homelessness & Criminalization

  • During his oversight of APD, White approved aggressive tactics toward volunteers feeding unhoused residents, part of a period that later drew a U.S. Department of Justice finding of unconstitutional patterns of force by APD. (Rolling Stone / APD Analysis)
  • In his current campaign, White has stated he would take a more aggressive approach toward unhoused people, emphasizing enforcement rather than services. (KOB interview, Nov. 2025)
