LEGISLATIVE E-ALERT: January 22, 2008

ALL families deserve stability and security!

The 2008 legislative session has started and we are on a fast track to passing House Bill 9, the Domestic Partnership Rights and Responsibilities Act, sponsored by Rep. Mimi Stewart. The bill passed the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee last week by a party line vote of 4-3. Over 80 supporters packed the room to share testimony with committee members.  Yesterday, at another crowded committee hearing, HB9 was given a due pass by a 9-4 vote by the House Judiciary Committee.

The legislation will now move to a vote before the full House.  This vote will likely take place on Thursday January 24th. Please contact Jennifer Rose (505) 459-2711 or jrose@aclu-nm.org for updates.

New videos show the need for legal protections for all New Mexico families.

As many of you know, we have been working tirelessly with Equality New Mexico for the past months talking to individuals, couples, and families across the state about the need for legal protections for all New Mexico families.

We have met some extraordinary families and we would like you to meet them and learn how you can help to ensure that these and other New Mexico families are no longer denied important legal protections.

ACTION» Please take a moment and listen to the stories of families whose lives would be impacted by this important legislation.  Click here to watch the videos: http://www.aclu.org/lgbt/relationships/newmexico.html
